Pastor James Irungu also known as Jimmy Irungu is a pastor, gospel musician and activists. He’s popularly known for his attempt to hug a tree for 80 hours to raise awareness of cancer.
Background & Biography
Pastor James Irungu was born on June 22, 1994 (Age 31). Hailing from Murang’a, James Irungu had always loved the things of God, joining gospel and church groups even while still in high school.
A graduate of Kenyatta University, James acquired presenting and radio skills at the NIBS College (Nairobi Institute of Business Studies), Thika Road Campus, located off Exit 13 in Ruiru. After completing his program at NIBS, he secured a job as a presenter at Radio Maria Kenya.
James Irungu was not just a presenter; he was also a pastor, leading the Jesus Compassion Ministry Church (JCM) branch in Kahuro, Murang’a County.

On January 4, 2026, James Irungu embarked on a three-day tree-hugging initiative to create cancer awareness. While he initially faced criticism from Kenyans for tapping into the spotlight and trend started by Truphena Muthoni, he later received encouragement due to his persistence. To show that everything was done in good faith, Truphena Muthoni traveled to the site where he was hugging the tree to offer moral support.
Pastor James Irungu had planned to hug the tree for 80 hours, but after standing for 79 hours and several minutes, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He had been hugging the tree in Murang’a for a total of 79 hours. By completing 79 hours, he surpassed Truphena Muthoni’s previous 72-hour record.
James Irungu was discharged from the hospital on January 8, although he suffered kidney damage.
