The Story of Mary Claire & Elvis Opiyo

Regardless of what happens between lovers, gender-based violence is unacceptable. Attempting to harm a woman because she refuses to marry you is something we should all condemn. The story of Mary Claire and Elvis Opiyo must be treated with the utmost seriousness.

Background

Mary Claire and Elvis Opiyo had been in a relationship for some time. Claire, who is currently 24 years old, is the daughter of an SDA church pastor. She met Elvis at the church, as both were members of the SDA church choir.

Elvis, a married man with two children, fell deeply in love with Claire during their time together. Choir rehearsals sparked feelings he could not resist. The temptation to pursue a relationship became real, and eventually, they began dating in secret. During this time, Elvis provided for Claire, allegedly supporting her through college and hoping that he would eventually marry her.

Upon graduation, Claire, a young woman with a bright future, reconsidered her relationship with Elvis, a married man with two children, and decided not to continue it.

This decision deeply angered and devastated Elvis, who could not accept Claire ending the relationship. Reports indicate that Elvis attempted to end his own life on several occasions after realizing that his emotional and financial investment in Claire was not reciprocated.

Acid Attack

On March 23, Elvis allegedly hired someone to attack Mary Claire with acid. Claire was injured, and her friend, who was with her at the time, also suffered acid burns. Immediately after the attack, Claire called for help, and passersby rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is currently fighting for her life.

Involvement of Elvis

Although Elvis did not physically carry out the attack, all evidence points to him as the mastermind. CCTV footage shows that he was at the scene shortly after the attack. Approximately 30 minutes after Claire was attacked, Elvis Opiyo appeared at the same medical facility where she had been taken for first aid.

Both Elvis and the attacker are now in police custody.
