The Story of Irene Wanjiku & James Opande

The story of Irene Wanjiku and James Opande began trending earlier this week, but this will not be the first time a girl has been exploited by foreign-born Kenyans who fly into the country, promise these vulnerable ladies that they will take them abroad, all in a bid to have access to their bodies.

Background

Irene Wanjiku is a 22-year-old lady. She hails from the Maasai tribe but currently resides in Mwihoko. She is a mother of a four-year-old son, a single mother trying to make ends meet.

Irene went viral in January of 2026 It was alleged that Irene Wanjiku had known James Opande for a couple of months earlier. Being in the country, James organised a meeting with Irene in a bar. According to Irene, James paid for a Bolt ride for her to Umoja, where he was having a drink.

When Irene arrived at the bar, they started talking, keeping in mind that James had promised to marry Irene upon his return to Kenya. So her meeting with him was a sort of relationship builder and not a hookup, as some would want to believe.

During their meeting, Irene was free with her supposed lover, and during these vulnerable times, James recorded everything that happened between them, something that should have been kept private in his phone gallery. This led to thousands of Kenyans shaming Irene.

The video was recorded without the consent of Irene, a crime in Kenya.

Call for Arrest

Immediately the video went viral, thousands of Kenyans began calling for the arrest of James, and government agencies and female rights organizations were already on top of the matter, seeking prosecution.

Human rights fighters like Geoffrey Mosiria have already begun fighting for Irene, inviting her for an interview.
