Background
Born in Mwanza in 1990 (Age 36) to a relatively middle-class family, Isaya Yunge reportedly experienced a difficult childhood. His parents separated when he was young, and he moved through foster homes. At different points, he also worked and herded animals while finding his way through life.
Despite these challenges, Yunge showed signs of greatness from a very young age. A rare gift for boldness, he was among the youngest people to attend the G8 Summit in Germany in 2007, when he was only 17 years old. He served as an Africa UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador at the summit and, during the trip, met with world leaders, including former U.S. President George W. Bush.
Isaya Yunge was one of the few young Tanzanians to embrace technology early and use it to solve specific problems affecting the African community. He created SomaApps and SomaFit.
SomaFit is a smart bracelet focused on the future of health and well-being in the African community, while SomaApps is a mobile application that is revolutionizing how scholarships are offered across Africa.
Education
Aside from his background in technology, Isaya Yunge has a deep love for education and knowledge. His work and research have earned him several notable recognitions, including the Queen’s Young Leaders Award from the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2018, an Ashoka Fellowship in 2019, and a place on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list.
Receiving the Queen’s Young Leaders Award was not enough for him. The young entrepreneur went on to take a Change Leadership course run by the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.
Wealth
Isaya Yunge is one of the few tech millionaires to emerge from Tanzania.
