Everything You Need To Know About TVETA

Bodies such as the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) exist to regulate and safeguard the integrity of Kenya’s technical and vocational education system. Their role is to ensure that institutions do not offer unaccredited programmes or award unrecognised qualifications, which could produce graduates who are not adequately prepared for the labour market or national development.

Recently, TVETA issued a statement revoking the accreditation of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM).

Why Was Kenya Institute of Management’s Accreditation Revoked?

TVETA revoked the accreditation of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) after it was found that the institution was operating beyond its approved mandate and awarding unrecognised qualifications.

The key issues identified included:

  • Offering and awarding academic and professional programmes without proper accreditation
  • Operating beyond its approved mandate (KIM was only accredited to offer programmes assessed by TVET-CDACC)
  • Engaging trainers who did not hold valid training licences
  • Awarding unauthorised qualifications

These violations led to the de-accreditation of the institution. On 20 April 2026, a notice was issued under the TVET Act (Cap 210A).

According to TVETA:

“It has come to the attention of the Authority that the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) is offering and awarding various academic and professional programmes to members of the public without accreditation. KIM was accredited to offer programmes assessed and certified by TVET-CDACC.”

TVETA further confirmed that the institution’s accreditation has been formally withdrawn:

“Pursuant to Section 36 and 37 of the TVET Act, the accreditation earlier issued to KIM and all its campuses in the Republic of Kenya has been revoked and all KIM campuses closed with immediate effect.”

Following the directive, KIM is required to cease offering programmes outside its approved scope, and its operations across all 13 campuses nationwide are subject to closure in line with the regulator’s enforcement actions.

What This Means for Students and Graduates

According to TVETA, the Kenya Institute of Management does not have the legal mandate to award qualifications. As a result, any certificate, diploma, or other qualification obtained from KIM after 2018 is not recognised for:

  • Employment
  • Further education
  • Professional advancement

“Consequently, any certificates, diplomas, or other qualifications obtained from the institution beyond 2018 are not recognised for purposes of employment, further education, or professional advancement.” — TVETA
